Visser-Rowland
1994 - III/49

This instrument was installed in a new and larger building in 1994, after a devastating fire had destroyed the 1907 sanctuary. This organ is very much in the Dutch tradition of most Visser-Rowland instruments. It is divided in matching free-standing cases on either side of the chancel. The Hoofdwerk (Great, above) and Rugwerk (Positive, below) face the Nave in the forward portion of the right-hand case. The Zwelwerk (Swell) occupies both levels behind the Hoofdwerk and Rugwerk, behind moveable louvers for volume control. The console is beneath the main case overhang in the chancel behind the eagle lectern, reversed so that the player faces across the choir. The Pedaalwerk (Pedal) occupies the entire case on the left-hand side of the chancel behind the pulpit, so its trackers run in a shallow trench under the choir.

Organbuilders Robert Coulter and John Pritchard entered into a collaboration with John Pritchard Organbuilder to begin a phased tonal redesign and revoicing of the Visser - Rowland organ in May of 2009. Through working with organist/choirmaster Dr. John T. Lowe, Jr., both Mr. Coulter and Mr. Pritchard devised the first steps in making this instrument more easily meet the Anglican traditions of the music ministry at Holy Trinity.

Among the first items addressed was the substitution of the Hoofdwerk 2ft Woudfluit with the Zwelwerk 2ft Octaff. The Rugwerk 8ft Kromhoorn was also significantly softened to serve as a more useful solo stop. The Zwelwerk V Sherp was regulated, tuned, and had some of the highest pitched ranks muted to better blend with the Zwelwerk Chorus and reeds. The playing action is mechanical linkage (trackers) which run below the chancel floor and beneath the console, except for the Bourdon (32, 16, 8) which are electric action. The stop and combination actions are electric/solid state.
